SHOW UP!

I attended my first ultra race Sunday. It was amazing! I watched people show up for themselves and for their teammates like nobody’s business. My friend Allen Burke completed his first ultra 50k! It was truly inspiring.

We arrived at 5:45 am. It was pitch black dark and cold Sunday morning. When I got out of my car, I smelled bacon and eggs cooking in one of the finely-decorated tents that was well-stocked with coffee, juice, mimosas and more.

If I could have bottled the energy circulating on that plantation, I could have sent a rocket to the moon. It was exhilarating to say the least.

Runners were there to run either a 50k, 30k, 10k, or race as part of a relay team. You can only imagine having to wait to be the last leg of the team. I talked to a 12-year-old little girl who was literally coming out of her skin waiting to run her part of the race.

I was not racing (which is a whole different story)… and it gave me an opportunity to witness the runners in a way I have never done because I am always with them.

My take-aways from the race and how running is a mirror for life:

  • Creating a new habit requires you to show up

  • Your energy takes on a different shape when you have a community to support you and to hold you accountable

  • You may want to quit, but you won’t when someone is counting on you

Let’s break this out a little ~

Creating a new habit requires you to show up!

“A habit must be established before it can be improved. If you can’t learn the basic skill of showing up, then you have little hope of mastering the finer details. Master the art of showing up.”
James Clear

This seems so simple. And it is, once you are in the habit of doing it. I showed up at the track yesterday morning in the freezing cold, and my friend Gerald says, “I don’t know why we do this. It is cold. My family does not understand. I just have to be here.”

I replied, “Yeah, it is what we do. It is Wednesday morning and regardless of rain, shine, hot or cold it is ingrained in our brains to show up. It is a habit.”

Remember, a habit is a thought and/or behavior you do over and over. It is what you do without even realizing you are doing it. Research says your habits account for about 40 percent of daily behaviors

Your energy takes a different shape when you have a community to support you and hold you accountable!

In James Clear’s book, “Atomic Habits” he says, “We tend to imitate the habits of three social groups:

  • the close (family and friends),

  • the many (the tribe), and

  • the powerful (those with status and prestige).”

“One of the most effective things you can do to build better habits is to join a culture where (1) your desired behavior is the normal behavior and (2) you already have something in common with the group. The normal behavior of the tribe often overpowers the desired behavior of the individual.”

Remember your vibe attracts your tribe! Find your tribe!

You may want to quit, but you won’t when someone is counting on you!

“Everyone comes to a point in life when you want to quit.
It is what you do in that moment that determines who you are.”
David Goggins

This is where grit and gratitude come into play. The power of having an attitude of gratitude attracts more to be grateful every single time! It works. Focus on what you GET to do. This gratitude gives you new energy!

You get to run!
You get to love!
You get to show up!

Grit in the gut will get you to the finish! You may not feel good. Your legs will hurt; you will be tired; you will be hungry. But with enough grit, you can do ANYTHING!

So whether you are running a 50k or a 5k, raising a difficult child, taking care of a sick loved one, dealing with an addiction, or just trying to make it through the Christmas holidays without killing your brother-in-law, all of this applies.

Show up with gratitude and a mindset to know you can do anything. You can be, do and have anything you want. It all starts with showing up!

Namaste,
Jen
